Alix – AMG Dance Founder
I began dancing at the age of four and trained at a local Dance school in Ballet, Tap, Modern and Jazz. From a very young age I knew that dance was going to be an important factor in my life and that I would pursue a career in this field. After leaving Rainham School for Girls, I studied Performing Arts (Dance) at College and then went on to complete a three year degree at the Univeristy of Surrey, graduating with a 2:1 degree in Dance and Culture Studies. Here I trained in Ballet, Contemporary, African, Kathak and Choreography and chose for my last year of study to specialise in Contemporary and African Dance and also Choreography. During my studies I realised that my interest and passion lay with Community Dance – that I wanted to make dance accessible to all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities. I no longer wanted a career in performing but wanted to teach others within my community, and in doing so, help to provide ‘Dance for All’.
I have attended many professional workshops in Contemporary, African and Choreography and have been a member of a local Youth Group which gave me the opportunity to perform in many dance platforms. I have also performed in the Cinderella Pantomime at the Central Theatre in Chatham and attended a Summer School at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London.I attended Medway Youth and LoopEd Youth Dance Company before leaving to go to University, I performed at the Brook Theatre with various age groups from differing backgrounds and dance abilities. My time here, working with such a diverse group of people, re-ignited my love for dance! I also had the opportunity to perform as part of LoopEd in many site specific dance pieces, including Medways Fuse Festival. I successfully completed my ‘Exercise to Music’ course in 2013 and now enjoy delivering fun, fitness and body conditioning classes for Adults in the area.
I have been teaching for the last 3 years both with AMG Dance (formally AMG Freedom Dance) and as a teacher for other local dance companies where I teach in Primary and Secondary Schools, Age Concern, Care Homes,Village Halls and at various special events.
I am also able to provide dance parties, and performance opportunities at local events for all of my classes. In addition to my teaching, I am employed part time by Medway Council as a Youth Support Worker, working with young people aged between 12 to 19 . I have completed many training courses as part of my youth work and have been fortunate enough to combine this work with being able to teach dance as a session activity in many youth clubs in Medway and Maidstone. I have worked alongside Medway Council and Kent County Council in helping to promote a Road Safety Campaign, performing in various Primary and Secondary schools in Medway and Kent to promote identifying the dangers of the road and how to keep myself safe by ensuring that I, as a pedestrian, was visible to car users. In 2012 I choreographed a performance with a colleague for Medway Fuse Festival. The piece ‘Changes in the Current’ allowed us to work with children in local schools and older adults in Day Centres. The piece looked at how the area we were dancing in (Rochester Esplanade) had changed from the Wartime to current day! Some of AMG’s adults also performed in this piece! My focus is to bring an element of fun to all of my classes, to encourage motivation and put across my love and enthusiasm for dance. Although currently AMG Dance does not partake in examinations, we can guarantee that all classes will be delivered by a fully trained tutor with the passion and determination to make our dancers the best that they can be!
We look forward to welcoming you to one of our classes soon!
